Adidas Originals

In 1924 Brothers Adolph and Rudolf Dassler founded a shoe factory in Herzogenaurach, Germany. By the end of the year they had a workforce of 12 making around 50 pairs of shoes a day. Among their many achievements, the Dassler brothers were suppliers to the German Olympics team.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens took four gold medals wearing Dassler’s shoes. Thereafter Adolph (also called Adi) and Rudolf formed two separate companies, adidas (1949) and Puma (1948). The formation of these two companies created a rift between the family members and the companies. After WWII, the two brothers no longer got along, and several theories circulated as to what caused the separation.

adidas is recognised by the three lines on its products – die drei Streifen – that were initially used to stabilise the sports shoes the company produced. The three lines were gradually used on team shirts and the trend escalated during the 1970s. The classic adidas symbol, the trefoil, was designed in 1972. Alongside its position in the world of sports, another contributing factor for adidas’ success has been its firm ties to youth cultures worldwide. In the 1980s, US rap legend Rund-DMS dedicated the song My adidas to adidas. The band and adidas together promoted the Superstar model, which became one of the most famous and best-selling sneakers of all time. Adidas has three sub divisions: Originals, Performance and adidas Y-3. Grand Shoes currently stocks the adidas Originals collection, which reflect the classic models in a contemporary context. Originally sports shoes, these shoes are now more suited as lifestyle and streetwear.

Puma

Founded by Rudolf Dassler after WWII, the company was initially called Ruda but later renamed Puma. Rudolf Dassler’s brother Adi Dassler founded the competitor adidas, which created a rift between the family members and the companies. The Dassler brothers had formerly worked well together at the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik and the schism between the brothers is cloaked in rumours.

The company’s first shoe was the Atom. Success followed on the domestic market in Germany, where several national football team players began wearing Puma. In 1958, the company began using Puma’s special shoe logotype, the Formstreifen. Puma enjoyed many achievements on the track and in the Olympic Games.

In the 1960s, the company positioned itself on the US market as the largest challenger to adidas. Puma invested in breaking into the US football market and sponsored one of the sport’s greatest players, Joe Namath. At the same time, Puma signed with Brazilian football star Pelé, who lent his name to a pair of the company’s football boots.

Although Puma has enjoyed enormous success with its technical innovations, the classic models are still the most popular among sneaker enthusiasts around the world. It is particularly interesting to note that Puma was the first shoe manufacturer to test Velcro® fasteners on their shoes.

J Shoes

J Shoes was founded in Leicestershire, England in 1997, and opened its flagship store on Carnaby Street in London in 2003. Subtle details, innovative materials and creativity make J Shoes the natural choice for trendsetters and quality conscious consumers.

What distinguishes J Shoes from many other shoes is the fact that their design studio is in the same building as their high-tech plant in Bangkok, Thailand. The advantage of having design and production under the same roof is that new materials, designs, details and cuts can be creatively tested to an extent very few other footwear manufacturer can offer. Their design philosophy is simple – shoes must have a certain character that is both fashionable and yet casual.

Merrell

Merrell originated in Vernal, Utah, USA in 1981 when Randy Merrell, maker of cowboy boots, designed a hiking boot. In Green Mountains, Vermont, Clark Matis (Olympic long-distance skier on the US Olympic team) and John Schweizer liked what they saw and came up with a business concept for Merrell Hiking Boots.

Merrell has since been supplying outdoor life enthusiasts with high-quality performance shoes. Merrell has always adapted its shoes to the ever-changing needs of the outdoor life market. The “outdoor life” concept has escalated from simply hiking in forests and mountains to a more urban activity and has led to greater functionality in shoes not specifically intended for outdoor life. As Merrell says, Let’s go outside.

Vans

Paul Van Doren founded Vans Shoe Company in 1966 and immediately moved the company to California. The business concept was to sell directly to the customer from production, thereby eliminating the middleman in sales and distribution.

By the mid 1970s, Vans had established itself as the preferred choice for many skateboarders, some of whom started coming up with ideas and suggestions for improving Vans. The result was the shoe “The Era.” Input from professional skateboarders like Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva proved that Vans was willing to listen to end users. In the 1980s, Vans encountered competition on the skateboard scene from basketball shoes. In a desperate attempt to win market shares, a tennis shoe was released that was not particularly successful. The company survived collapse through several restructuring initiatives in the late 1980s. A growing skate culture in the 1990s enabled the company to stay true to its origins. Today, Vans has a strong position and sponsors professional skaters like Geoff Rowley, Tony Trujilo and Dustin Dollin.
